Mumbai Set for a Makeover: 36 Railway Stations to Be Upgraded Under ₹1,800-Crore Amrit Bharat Mission

Mumbai, April 14: In a massive infrastructure boost for the city’s lifeline, 36 railway stations across Mumbai are set to undergo major redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with a total investment exceeding ₹1,800 crore. The move aims to transform the daily commuting experience for millions of Mumbaikars who rely on the suburban railway network.

The revamp will focus on easing overcrowding, modernizing facilities, and creating a more commuter-friendly environment. Railway officials have confirmed that stations will feature expanded platforms, upgraded passenger amenities, and improved movement flow.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during his review of the project on April 11, emphasized the importance of the upgrades, stating that the redevelopment will significantly enhance travel comfort and safety.

The Amrit Bharat Mission is a nationwide initiative targeting the upgradation of over 1,300 stations, including 132 in Maharashtra. For Mumbai, this includes essential additions such as better signage, CCTV surveillance, designated entry-exit points, improved waiting areas, and green infrastructure like solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and water-saving systems.

A key highlight of the project is the redevelopment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), pegged at Rs. 1,810 crore. However, work on this iconic station is progressing slowly, with only 10% of the construction completed so far.

Despite the delays, the overall mission promises a transformative experience for Mumbai’s rail commuters, aiming to blend modern convenience with sustainable infrastructure.
